image-modeling career

Modeling as a career can be fun, rewarding and adventurous if and when one becomes a success in it. Modeling career comes with its own challenges but if you’re determined, focused and consistent, the fruit can be worthwhile. Today, I want to discuss how to get started in the modeling industry. Also, I have an e-book that I want to give out to you, so stick with me to the end of this post and you’re going to get something special. Hey, the e-book is free of charge.

1. Define Your Niche

Alright, the very first step into getting started in the modeling industry is that you have to know what type of model you want to be for your modeling career. Are you a fitness, plus-size, runway, commercial prints, petite, or fashion model? You must know what category you fit into so that way, you can concentrate your efforts into those categories of modeling. Once you figure out what type of modeling you want to get into and what best fits your features.

2. Get Your Model Portfolio Ready

So, if you think you’re ready to start the journey of your modeling career, one of the things you need to do is to get your model portfolio prepared. It is absolutely vital to have a good modeling portfolio as this showcases your modeling capabilities and your different looks which can impress your potential employers and have you represented.

It doesn’t change a thing if your plan is working for a modeling agency or freelance modeling. The truth is, completely impossible for a model not to have a portfolio. Having a portfolio is very vital that the pictures contained in your portfolio are professionally produced, taken by a professional photographer with a high-quality camera and of the utmost possible quality. If your intention is to look for work as a model through a decent modeling agency, you will discover that many of them will assist to arrange a professional photographer to take the pictures for your portfolio.

3. Wet Your Feet

The next thing to do is to get your feet wet. So, whether it’s doing some trade for prints, you know collaborating with photographers to build their portfolio, and you’re also building your portfolio or whether it’s working with designers to do some shows maybe even for free.

Whether it’s going to open calls and castings just so you know what it feels like and even if you get rejected, that’s okay because this is part of the industry. Getting that experience is very important because it’s going to make you more comfortable when you get represented and you’re ready for some real work and that would increase your booking ratio as well.

4. Find an Agency

The fourth step into getting started in your modeling career is to find an agent. Now, if you remember in step number one I said you’ve to know what type of model you want to be. This is very important because when you go out to agencies, you want to make sure they represent your category.

For example, if you’re a fitness or commercial print model, you have no business going to agents that only represent high-fashion models. This is because you’re likely going to get rejected, waste your time and get embarrassed at the same time. As well you’ll be wasting the agency’s time and somehow, denting your modeling career.

5. Attend Competitions

It’s just not a good look, you should know what type of models the agency represents. I highly recommend you find out if it’s the right fit for you before you attend. One of the best ways to get started in the modeling industry is to look up some competitions. Some local or big international competitions. Models easily get discovered during competitions. So again, if you can find some local or international competitions in your country, make this an absolute ‘must-try’ to attend.

6. Dedication

The last tip I want to give you is to make sure you dedicate some time to your modeling career; this is because modeling is something that’s very time intensive. You’re constantly traveling, you’re going on go-sees, and you’re going on open calls especially in short notice. So, if you have a full-time job or if you’re still in school, this could be something that can be very demanding.

Most times, agencies will demand you to go to open calls and castings on very short notice, and they will expect you to be there without any excuses. So you have to make sure that you have a flexible schedule. Whether you’re working a part-time job or you have or maybe you are taking time off from school. Make sure you have that dedicated time to focus on your modeling career.
